Yeah, here is a concern...even the rifle I have now would probably be sufficient for a few starter matches. I'd perhaps rather get my feet wet with it and later build the proper rig. I'd hate to tear this 6MM AI apart to replace it as a 6BR for not a large gain! As I said (and I haven't totally got this new tube dialed in...) but this rifle currently shoots low .2s (3 shot mind you) and I did shoot a 3 3/4" 5 shot group @ 500 with it a week or so ago. Not near your guys calibre but its a good start I believe. Where I believe I can improve is I only have a 4.5-14 Fullfield II for glass, I shoot with a Shooters Ridge pivot bipod (not ideal) and shoot off a flimsy plywood table with folding legs. Perhaps better glass and a decent front rest would be a better start.

Thanks for all the great help guys...keep it coming! I'm excited to get started! ;D

It has a bedded B&C Remington Light Tactical stock and Rifle Basix trigger set at 1#(the barrel and action you know) Just for guys asking!

Thanks again
Brian

Brian since you are content to shoot a few matches with that rifle the next thing to concentrate on is having about 4 windflags.  That will get you started.  There are a few types out there that you can buy or quite easily make your own to get started.

On Benchrest Central there is an article on making your own flags that are quite simple but effective, even some strips of surveyors tape is a huge improvement.

Just as a matter of interest, I shot my first Group match with a Remington 700 heavy barrel in a .243. Would have won it had it not been for the other 9 shooters.

See Bill, you should have been using your wind flags :)
I have never seen Bill set up windflags at a match that I can recall, but he does pretty darn good without them. I could never do it.

John, is that honest to goodness for REAL?  Maybe at the bigger ranges with 30+ benches I could see.  Up here where I have shot we have small 15 bench ranges.

Maybe Bill is on to something.  I sometimes wonder if there is enough info from the flags on these small ranges?????

Brian there are the Hood Dual vane flags, Aussie flags(I feel WAY OVERPRICED) Graham flags, and James G on the board has Joe Ponto's Propellor design which he likes.  I also think Ilike his Propellor flag the most of the ones I ahve seen.

Calvin, apparently he owns some but he does not set them up at matches, I am pretty sure he watches the field of flags but you will need to ask him as he is the only one that really knows.

I've done some more research and contacted a few more knowledgeable and helpful people and have decided to start the process of looking for a used 6ppc.
So, I've come accross a site I'm sure all of you have seen ...

www.benchrest.com/shooterscorner

There is approximately a 100 used BR rifles for sale there but my brain scrammbles looking at all these ads! :-\

Some of you guys wanna take the time to check them out and perhaps give me your opinion on some of the best buys there that would be helpful!

Brian, it's a time consuming procedure to get a gun out of the States.  If you can source one in Canada, it's faster and usually similar in price.

Jeff Wardlow has some very nice BR guns for sale and he knows where there are more.  Try him.

Cheers
Greg

I just phoned the gentleman and he says he's not ready to sell it just yet. He's going to wait until spring and attend a match and see how he can walk. He's going to be 93 years old. If he can't walk very well then he will phone me. His name is Carl, they call him Charlie and he reminds me of Walt Berger.

I hope I will still be shooting Benchrest when I'm 93 years old.

Dwayne

Greg,

I have many friends/clients I've guided over the years...they have valid PALS(for owning and possessing rifles here in Canada) which makes buying a rifle from them real simple. Otherwise you're probably right, it could be tough!

Thanks Seiber...I sent you a PM.

Being you're a local shooter...any word on some possible dates for shoots at Regina?
