Centerfire Discussions / Re: Wood Stocks
« on: December 25, 2009, 12:23:04 PM »
Wood/carbon fiber stocks are great, like JMV my BAT stock is a piece of art.
Unfortunately it is no longer being produced, and there in lies one issue.
For those who have, or wish to have more than one rifle, you end up with
different stocks. This takes away from consistent gun handling
(I don't need no stinking gun handling) from gun to gun.
When the boys got the JTR stock off the ground I purchased one with plans to
get more of them, due to being a good design and repeatable supply.
As we have all recently heard, supply may become an bit of an issue???????

As I understand the concepts of wood/carbon stocks, the soft light wood(s) used
aid in vibration dampening and overall stock weight targets.

One of the stock concepts expressed to me in the US, was that the straight
carbon fiber stocks are to ridged, causing some suspected unwanted vibrations in
the overall platform (rifle). Folks like Tony B. use fiberglass stocks in a Scoville design.

At the Nationals in St. Louis, I observed that there were plenty of both wood and moulded
type of stocks in the top 20+ shooters. So I can not add any insight into which may be
better in our game, but like most things of the game, what works for you is the main driver.

I do love the look of wood, but the cost of these type of stocks are generally several hundred
dollars more, which we all know plays heavily into our choices.

Good luck with your choices in stocks.

It is not a question IF Bill is squeezing his bag,
but how often is choosing to do so.
Sorry Bill, but there was an opening.
