Centerfire Discussions / Re: Why Don’t More Shooters Use H322?
« on: October 10, 2010, 07:26:58 PM »
A bunch of us in CR have switched to VV133 from H322E because of a spreadsheet program that was on 6br.com a couple of years ago.  It showed that VV133 would give approx 40% better bbl life than 322.  The program was supposedly validated with real data from various target shooters.  We thought, what the hell, why not get more bbl life.  VV is a little harder to get but we manage.

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Group measuring caliper.
« on: August 05, 2010, 02:15:36 PM »
We use a Jones group measuring tool in Campbell River.  I bought the tool seperate and then a Canadian Tire digital caliper which is on sale right now for $14.99 and it works well.  Cold weather blanks out the LCD display on the caliper but with slight warming it comes back.  It sure speeds up group measuring.

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Backers
« on: July 18, 2010, 12:40:14 PM »
No need here for photos Bill, but thanks for the offer.  I've seen photos of a couple of moving backer systems and I have Ratigans book.  One was a drum type paper holder that rotated continously, the other a  big flat paper clamp that cycled back and forth.  Nobby Uno told me of one that used to be in Clearwater that was a single strip of butchers paper.  They had a roll at one end of the target frames and an electric winder at the other end.  They pulled out the whole strip, hooked it on and let it wind up ever so slow.  Wouldn't work for us, we get howling southeasters at about 1/3 of our shoots.

I like the idea of mechanical moving backers but the KISS principle is the best though.

The stationary backer is the simplest system and to correct the problem Bill spoke of, why couldn't you have a manually sliding tray that holds the backer.  Have a 11"x17" backer, start close to it's bottom, at each target change move it down 1.5" or so.  Have preset holes drilled into the side of the slider frame.  Pull out the pin, reset the pin to the next level & drop down the backer on its frame.

The mechanism part to make it move isn't a problem, it's whether or not the 5 shots are displayed  clear enough and I think the NBRSA through Calvin says it is ok.

Any critique of a stationary/slider system is welcome.

Thanks for that info Calvin.
I think you're right about the 72"@ 100yds.
I don't believe any of our guys would cheat but backers are there for a reason.

Can you use stationary backers set back 3'-5' behind the group targets and get distinctive 5 separate bullet holes?  It'll save me from making a moving backer system.

I'm going to try and get our guys to shoot a regular BR match instead of fun stuff.  I'll probably have to run another monthly shoot as there's only 5-8 guys that want to shoot pure groups.

Joe Mendham had a Hart RB/RP I think for sale on Gunnutz.  Reasonable price if I remember right.  Can't remember if it was a LV or HV

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Wind Indicators
« on: June 14, 2010, 10:22:06 AM »
As far as I can see on Graham's website, he doesn't make a wind indicator, just flags.  The Carbon River windflag outfit in Puyallup doesn't make one either.

Calvin, did you have the indicators with the plastic pop bottle on top of the rod or the new one with the whirly wheel on top?  Do you want to sell your "now, sit in the shed" indicators?

Centerfire Discussions / Wind Indicators
« on: June 13, 2010, 09:44:51 PM »
We just had a shoot in Campbell River and I got to try out my new wind indicator that I bought from Killough Shooting Sports in Texas.  Man, is it nice to have.  A couple of other guys want one now so I thought I'd ask this forum if anyone in Canada makes one.

The one I have is made by Danny Keeney and sold though Killough.  It is kinda cheaply made but for $75 US with a stand, and it works, it's ok value.  I just would like to buy in Canada.

Thanks

The boys are right Charles.  Buy a used bench gun for less money.  Unless you want the Sako for a collection, it's very overpriced as a shooter.
good luck

Single shot varminters with the target trigger are a premium.
-I've seen a guy pay $1600 for a used one
-I've bought an A1 sporter in excellent cond for $700 and another for $1000.
-I pd $1000 for a 75 ss/s 6ppc repeater in excellent cond.
-A friend bought a single shot 491 varminter 6ppc for $800 in vg cond.
-Another friend 2yrs ago bought an good cond A1 6ppc repeater varminter with target trigger and a whole bunch of stuff with it for $1000 shipped

It's worth whatever you want to pay.  They don't make them anymore and if you really want it, it's only money.

What do you mean by a "floating bolt action"?  Was the bbl held in a bbl block and the action floating?

I totally agree with Rick.  Peter is a really good guy.  I remember ordering my first brass from him 10 yrs or so ago, and he said to send him a personal cheque after I got the goods!  He has faith in shooters.  I try to support him and his business when I can.

I've known 3 people that have or had one.  They all shoot very well.  Once you have a load worked up for them, 5 shots @ 100yds under .5" is no problem and they are consistent.  Remington is trying.

At the Calgary gun show there was a guy from Brandon, Manitoba - Hi-Pro Precision Gunsmithing (hiproprecision.com) that builds BR guns and sells actions, bbls, Jewell triggers, stocks and other BR stuff.  He had a couple of BAT actions at the show and a bunch of Bartlein & Lilja bbls and a couple of Jewell triggers.  He also had a SEB rest there for sale.

Another source in Canada

Here's a link to some electron microscope pics that Dennis Sorensen had done on a BR bbl crown.  His explanation of the pics is close to the bottom of page one.
