We have discussed and demonstrated the problems with using a sun shade tube.  Everybody uses a mirage shield and the sun doesn't shine into the scopes, so I don't know why some guys are still using them.

You guys gotta come out to the Island in the winter for one of our shoots. 1-3 degrees Celsius, howling southeaster with sleet or torrential rains with 98% humidity.  Or 2 feet of snow on the ground with 1 degree  and west coast rain.  We only shoot out to 300yds when it's that bad.  Getcha trained up for your spring shoots.

Good luck on the Nats.

We shoot through falling snow at least once a winter in Campbell River.  It's great.  You can see the wind, every swirl, gust and puff.  Unless it's a whiteout, then you get to sit by the stove.

Brian, it's a time consuming procedure to get a gun out of the States.  If you can source one in Canada, it's faster and usually similar in price.

Jeff Wardlow has some very nice BR guns for sale and he knows where there are more.  Try him.

Hi Brian, in Campbell River we have 10 Fun BR Shoots/yr from 100 to 500yds depending on weather.  There are a multitude of calibers shot from .222's to .308's.  The custom class guns are all 6ppc's and they do fine shooting 65-68 gr bullets out to 500yds and nothing touches them at 100-200.   2" - 2.5" groups are not uncommon at 500.

There are guys(myself included) that have Factory Custom guns like your 700 with custom bbls/stocks/triggers chambered in 6br.  I have a 700 in 6br with a 14 twist and 9 twist bbls.  I shoot 68 gr Barts out of the 14 and 90 Bergers from the 9.  The wind will push the lighter bullets around more than the lighter ones but that's not to say that you can't shoot a good group with the 68's.  Reading the wind/mirage/light changes, is where it's at no matter what you're shooting.

If I were you, and I wanted to start shooting short range BR, I'd get a 13.5-14 twist bbl for my 700, get it chambered for a 6ppc and do a switch bbl.  You will have to adjust your Rem extractor or put in a Sako style to grab the smaller dia case.   The ppc will give you the confidence that any errors in the group did not come from the cartridge.  The 6br is an accurate cartridge and is very good with bigger bullets but history has proven that the case capacity/bullet combo that outperforms in short range BR is the 6ppc.  For that matter take your $700 for a new bbl job and sink it into Rick Pollocks PGW LV and have at 'er.  If you're into little bitty groups, you'll just end up with a custom gun one day anyway, might as well start out with one.

cheers

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Wipe out
« on: December 13, 2010, 07:54:33 PM »
I've been using Wipe Out - Patch Out  & Accelerator for a few years.  I was using Butch's Bore Shine.  I cleaned with Butch's and then tried the Wipe Out.  I got more blue.    I've used Wipe out since.

I show people how it works with old pennies.  Take three old pennies with the same degree of oxidation on them.  Put an ammonia based cleaner on one, put straight Wipe Out on one and Wipe Out with Accelerator on the last.  The one with the accelerator starts to bubble.  I leave them for the same length of time and then wipe them off with a patch.  They all take off the oxidation, but I feel  the Wipe Out with accelerator has done a better job.  Plus the wife doesn't mind me cleaning the guns in the house when there is no or very little smell of ammonia.

It's kinda like Fords vs Chevys.  Whatever works for ya.

Cheers
Greg
