You might find some Sako .22ppc brass.  A friend bought some from Granlunds a few yrs ago.

Barts bullets I don't think so.  If Dan Opel gets back to making .22 cal bullets get some of his, they work well.

Get some Lapua 6br brass from Hirsch Precision.

Cheers

I got this scope from Rob S in early 2013, it had the elevated crosshair which I couldn't get used to, so I sent it back to Deon, $400 later, got a regular fine crosshair put in.  Glass excellent, has some faint marks in the finish from Kelbly rings.  C/W leather lens caps.   $2600 shipped and insured.  Will consider BR guns in trade.   PM for pics or more info

Like Jeff said, March scopes have gone up.  This scope is now CA$ 3200, at your door will be CA$ 3600

Rifles / Re: WTB Varmint for Score Rifle
« on: August 02, 2013, 07:52:56 PM »
Hi Ray, how'd the 6br work?  Some guys shoot the 80gr Bergers at short range here and the 105's out at 500.

If you want more score targets, there's an outfit in the States that sells them quite reasonable.  Here's a link  http://www.shotmaster10x.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=1852

Hi Ray, for a long time most guys in Campbell River have shot their 6ppc's out to 500yds.  We start with a relay at 100yds then jump out to 500 for 3 relays or so then back to 300yds and finish back at 100.  The 6ppc's will shoot 2" - 2.5" groups at 500 fairly easily.  Lately a few guys use another 6br custom gun for the 500 and maybe the 300 depending on the wind, leaving their 6ppc for the short range.  The 6br's with 105's will group around and under 1.5".

One fellow has a switch bbl Panda and goes back and forth from ppc to 6br then back to ppc.

Not saying any one way is better than the other, just how some do it out here.

cheers
Greg

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Poplar as wood for Benchrest stock
« on: May 20, 2013, 11:19:32 AM »
Hi Bob,  I have been involved in logging & sawmilling all my life and over the years  have cut and used both types of poplar available here on the coast.
Black Cottonwood is a soft, wet, fuzzy wood that when dried & planed is light cream coloured with greys streaks, quite light, breaks fairly easily and dimensionally stable.  When falling the tree, cottonwood has no holding or tear strength on the holding wood.  You can't steer them.  Farmers use cottonwood for floors on barns where it is easy on cows feet and low slivering.  Scott Paper used to have Cottonwood plantations in the Fraser River valley and used the chips for toilet and facial tissues.  Very absorbent and soft on the tush.

Aspen is a totally different wood.  Aspen has incredible tear strength and toughness.  Ranchers use aspen boards for corrals.  There was a story how some mustang ran at the fence to bust through.  When it hit the fence boards they bent and then sprung back throwing the mustang back into the corral.   They use Aspen chips for OSB lumber.  Aspen when dried and planed is light creamy/yellow with reddish streaks through it.  Fairly light and stable but tough.

My dad used both for 10" plank paneling in his woodworking shop  and of the two, aspen is the prettiest and most striking.  Cottonwood is kinda blah.

Now for a benchrest stock you wood(hah) want different properties than for building lumber.  There are resources on the net that detail properties of different woods and you might get some ideas of what other stock woods properties are and then compare to the poplars.

Good luck
Greg

« on: January 24, 2013, 12:11:24 PM »
If you would crank out some 117's, we would definately try them.

At our last BR shoot, Dave D said you made a 125 but we thought that they might be a bit long for our 1:17 twists.  We do have guys with faster twist .30's that could shoot them.  I'll let them know
