Centerfire Discussions / Re: My 6ppc witchita failed to fire
« on: April 07, 2010, 02:16:53 PM »
I am not sure what to think of this I was using fed 205's forming some new brass I got about 4 of them that didn't fire out of 15  :o .
The primers were indented so I loaded up 20 of the remaining primers in my 22 br tried them and no missfires is it possible I don't have enough spring tension I know ppc's are set weak to begin with .
I have never had issues before with this gun and I also had the bullets tight in the lands there should have been no issues with the case jumping ahead.

Seems rather unlikely to be the primers, 4 bad ones out of 15 would be unheard of.

Few things jump to mind:

-Firing pin spring is getting gummed up, remove it to double check it is clean. Also check that the whole assembly is clean and the firing pin is not dragging on any debris inside the bolt.
-Firing pin is damaged, ie tip is deformed, bent or broken off a bit.
-Brass is moving ahead under firing pin contact, even with bullet in the jam. Maybe seat longer or use a longer bullet. Size brass so it is a crush fit to chamber (if possible) for fireforming purposes.

Hope that helps!

I would like to comment on this one but I know I do not have enough experience to have seen one.

I guess that is what my problems are.....  When will I ever gain that experience so I will stop saying it is "MY LACK OF EXPERIENCE"

To much internet reading on BR and tuning.  DA cra+, horizontal tune, vertical tune, tune for this cross wind or that croass wind........

Oh boy.............................

Maybe throw a Uppy Downy flag into to screw with your mind even more.......................... ??? ??? ???

I think we all like to talk about the minutia of the game, and endless tuning etc, but the truth of the matter is the rifle gets you on the playing field, the rest is up to you. In short, don't get too hung up on the rifle. The best shooters pour thousands of rounds downrange every year. They know what the wind is going to do before the shot, and don't get surprised that often. Me? I get surprised a lot!. As far as I know there are no shortcuts to the top. To that end, I will try and get out this weekend!

You need something with some weight to it, to keep it steady while you are out there chasing a condition. Not sure any of the Caldwells are that heavy? You could always hang some sandbags over the the legs to keep it from moving around.

" Rather than simply missing a condition, one can admit to misjudging the necessary synaptic frequency for a particular shot "
But Bill wouldn't the shooter still be to blame?
I prefer to stick to alibi's that are mechanical in nature. From the amount of scopes I "fix" I believe most shooters prefer my alibi method.

Good idea for a new thread!

.252 agg (3x5 shot groups) at 54 clicks. It was -6C, winds were light. I really need for things to warm up. I doubt the testing at this temp means all that much.

There are quite a few online DA calculators.  Here are a couple:
http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_da.htm
http://www.csgnetwork.com/densaltcalc.html
You can install a DA calculator app into your Iphone. $1!

Most of the info you need is on weathernetwork.ca and as far as altitude, google earth can get you that. Or look up the nearest airport on google. Close enough for our needs.

I just went by memory that Rosebud is at about 5500' elevation and Tacoma can't be more than 500' elevation. Plug in 25C temp and the density altitudes go way up.

Depending on which calculator you use, you will need local atmospheric pressure, or you will need what is called pressure altitude (what an aircraft altimeter reads when set to 29.92 " of mercury at that location). Local barometric pressure is easier to get!

For sure temp and physical local elevation are the biggest factors, then air pressure, then humidity.

Interesting stuff, but maybe not all that significant? Temp is the big player, but when you travel as much as many have planned this year, it might be nice to know where you sit in terms of DA. One more thing to note in your log book. I plan to keep an eye on DA as the day progresses. For this year it will be more out of curiosity.

I read that and I think Beggs is right about the 1.2 between nodes. Yet I shoot the same load at Tacoma as here. Not that I have ever shot that well in Tacoma in a match, but testing for a couple of days before the match showed the tune to be perfect, so go figure!

He also says the node repeats every 2000' of density altitude. Rosebud and Tacoma are about 6000' apart in density altitude. In "theory" tuning at Rosebud should still put you on a node in Tacoma.... Seems too easy to me....

How many clicks? I got it to 54 clicks and it was getting about 1/2 to 2/3 up the neck.

« on: March 28, 2010, 08:59:58 AM »
Matt, you won't see boresnakes used by accuracy enthusiasts. They are a convenience item. Too much chance to round off the crown, and not sure they clean all that well.

As to cleaning after every target, that is common practice. You will need to experiment a bit with your cleaning program to see what the barrel will prefer. Try every second target for example or every third target.

Fouling shots are common.

Squeaky clean doesn't seem to be of a benefit, since it is only squeaky clean for the first shot. Most will clean enough to restore accuracy, not get it to the bare metal.

Greg,

Wish I knew more and could understand this sort of research. I know I frequently lack focus on the line, and that is a big problem when in some respects shooting groups is not only a wind reading contest but also a short term memory contest.

Has anybody else read this thread on the above topic? http://benchrest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68145 It is time consuming but has a few good bits in there, more towards the end of the thread.

It has a lot of info on tuners and how it relates to tracking temperature and density altitude.

The question is, have any of you bothered to track density altitude? For example, at Rosebud our density altitude in the summer would be about 7000', whereas in Tacoma, WA it would be more like 1000' or less. According to the people in the thread that would really throw the tune out the window. Over the course of a day you could easily see the DA vary 1000-2000' from a cold morning to a hot afternoon

Has anybody taken the steps to track this and deal with it according to previously recorded DA readings and powder measure settings?

Another good tidbit in there is that nodes for the 6PPC are about 1.2 gr apart, according to Beggs. Could it be so simple to move up or down .6gr to get a rifle in tune, when you know it is for sure out of tune?

And you thought you had nothing to think about this weekend!

First off, welcome to Alberta!

Schedule is here: http://www.benchrest.ca/Schedule__Calendar_.html

Rosebud Club info is here: http://www.benchrest.ca/Clubs.html (take note it is not near the town of Rosebud!).

As far as shooting, gophers are up now, and there should be plenty around Oyen!

Calvin,

Sounds promising especially for the guys shooting a .262 neck as you say. Looks to have about .011" wall thickness in the neck according to your measurements.

Hope it is better than the old norma at holding pressure. They did have a reputation for being soft.

Any idea where we might find it in Canada?

anyware in canada that they shoot 1000yd benchrest?
not sure about nokomis?

Burns Lake in BC holds a 1000 yd bench shoot every year. Campbell River BC holds a shoot each month that goes out 500 and 600 yds. Schedule here: http://www.benchrest.ca/Schedule__Calendar_.html I am not aware of any sanctioned 1000 yd BR shoots in Western Canada. Maybe there is a shoot in the East I am not aware of?

Well since you asked:  Is it possible to be competitive at all without a fully custom rifle?  ie. dress a factory rifle up to the nines to compete with?

I'll have to check out the Regina club - thanks.

Welcome Matt!  Pretty much everyone starts where you are, by dressing up a factory rifle. It provides the entry point.

Some of the clubs do offer factory classes or semi custom classes where everyone is on the same footing.

You can always rebarrel and restock a factory rifle which will get you a competitive platform.

Lastly, most will reccomend a used br rifle to get going. A simple rebarrel and you will be up and running. This avenue costs a lot less than building from scratch and is the fastest way to get into a competitive rifle.

Keep the questions coming!

Rick
