Off Topic / Hunting rifle accuracy

Nothing to do with BR, but sure something to do with firearm accuracy from another shooting forum I frequent.  I thought this guys group was pretty amazing.

How often do shooters get groups like that?  I'll go out on a limb and say not often.   ???

Definitely worth it!  The class doesn't take very long.  My friend only took 2 weekends to finish the schooling.  When I took hunter safety in '98, it was once a week for like 2 months for something like that! :o  After that it's just a form you send in.  Then he can do all the shooting his little heart desires!

Do you have your PAL?  I"m still psyched about getting into benchrest (haven't gotten there yet :( ) but you and your friend should go for it if for no better reason than defense against bottles and saber-toothed prairie dogs!   ;D

I've heard it said that if anybody claims to know anything about quantum mechanics, they don't know anything about quantum mechanics.

I'll not try to wrap my head around it - just go with it!

Again, thanks for the quick and informative replies.  My buddy doesn't do competition, but the gun in question is a new CZ 452.  I'd hate to see anything bad happen to it, it's a super nice gun!  The bore snake is pretty convineint and I think that's a big reason he likes it.  I hear rimfires don't really need to be cleaned very often (one guy I heard said once a decade, wheather it needs it or not  :P ).  This is a sporting gun, not a comp. gun.

You rimfire BR guys, is it pretty well the same as the centerfire guns, or do you clean less often?

I got another question for y'all.  What are your opinions on bore snakes and similar products?  I have a friend that swears by them but the way I see it, if they were that great, nobody would clean bores with a rod.  What is the effect of rod vs snake cleaning?  I figured you accuracy buffs would know better than others.

While I got you on this topic, how does cleaning your rifle affect your groups?  Do I understand correctly that a gun is cleaned between each group shot?  Do you worry about making fouling shots after cleaning?  Would a squeaky-clean barrel help/hurt accuracy?

Unrelated note:  it there a way to identify new posts from the last time you logged in?  I see threads with new posts in them labeled, but those new posts themselves aren't labeled.  It's a little tricky to read from where you left off.   ???

Well, im impressed. Thanks for the decent comments and just normal talk, without anybody trying to prove a point. This is THE FIRST shooting related forum, where it seems guys are trying to be helpful. Thanks.

Yeah, that's what I found when I joined here a week ago or so.  Very nice folks.  I joined another BR forum a while ago, and not that the guys were mean, but they didn't seem overly concerned about being helpful either.

If your looking for a shooting/hunting forum, try shootersforum.com.  Friendly, knowledgeable people, experience in most facets of shooting, and guys that have been shooting twice as long as I've been alive!  Moderated very well.  Best site out there (but lacking in the competition area: that's why I joined here!).

It looks like you'll have a chance to try BR out before me.  Don't forget when you go for your first time to post pictures and comments about your experience.  :)

Again, kudos to the guys here!

Wow, thanks for that.

Does a shooter have to tailor his (or her) loads to the specific conditions for a given day, or can you use the same load generically?  If tailoring is needed, do you just adjust the load or are there other concerns as well?

Edit:  What about compensators?  I've heard about guys with wild things attached to thier barrels that are supposed to help tune the rifle.  I'm thinking like a BOSS device.  Are these devices common?  Legal?

Like I said before, I'm really new to this whole thing, so please humor me and answer some questions.  :)

A little background:  I'm interested in short range BR shooting for groups, not score.  I've tried to answer as much as I could of my own questions, but internet pages leave a guy wanting, and it's SO much easier to "hear" it rather than "read" it. (Ok, it's a forum, I know I'll be reading responses, but you know what I mean.)  :P

1)  What makes a competition gun more accurate than a dressed-up factory gun?  More rigid action?  Tighter tolerances?  Truer Action?  Better stock design/bedding?  (On a side note, did I understand correctly that some people actually glue their actions in, not just bedded?  No screws or anything?)  Better (more uniform) materials?   Did I miss anything?

2)  Stocks seem to be made of laminated wood, (or composites?) is there any other materials used for this?

3)  Is there a point chambering a short range BR gun to anything but 6PPC?  What other rounds are competitive?  Does it make a difference between 100, 200 or 300 yrds?  6BR?  The .222 still work?  Are .30s at that much of a disadvantage?  Are .224 caliber rounds competitive?

4)  What equipment makes a complete setup (aside from rifle)?  Rests (front and back), ammo boxes, requisite gun care products, notebooks/logbooks, a reloading setup, and something to move it all?

I'm sure I could think of more but maybe I'll just leave these here for now.  I know it's a novel, just answer at your leisure, no rush.  Thanks in advance for the patience.  :)

Well since you asked:  Is it possible to be competitive at all without a fully custom rifle?  ie. dress a factory rifle up to the nines to compete with?

I'll have to check out the Regina club - thanks.

Hi all,

I'm Matt, and I'm new to shooting and completely inexperienced and unlearned in BR.  I figured this would be a good place to start (the BR part, I got other sources on shooting so I won't bother you with "What would be a good hunting rifle to get"-like questions ;) ).  I was happy to find a BR forum that was Canadian based.  I'm in Saskatoon right now (hopefully to stay too :) ).

It took me a while to log in because I kept waiting for a confirmation email that my membership request was accepted, but one never came.  Ah well, I'm here now.

I'm a little apprehensive about being here, because everything I've seen and heard about BR tells me it's a hard sport to break into.  Very close-knit group and very technical jargon filled talk, but I'll get it eventually.  :)

Glad to be here.

PS - I chose this handle before I read the requirements for a name-based one.  I put my name in my signature, I hope that's ok.  I don't want to change my handle.  :(
