Off Topic / Hunting rifle accuracy

Nothing to do with BR, but sure something to do with firearm accuracy from another shooting forum I frequent.  I thought this guys group was pretty amazing.

Off Topic / Bore snakes for cleaning
« on: March 27, 2010, 11:00:15 PM »
I got another question for y'all.  What are your opinions on bore snakes and similar products?  I have a friend that swears by them but the way I see it, if they were that great, nobody would clean bores with a rod.  What is the effect of rod vs snake cleaning?  I figured you accuracy buffs would know better than others.

While I got you on this topic, how does cleaning your rifle affect your groups?  Do I understand correctly that a gun is cleaned between each group shot?  Do you worry about making fouling shots after cleaning?  Would a squeaky-clean barrel help/hurt accuracy?

Unrelated note:  it there a way to identify new posts from the last time you logged in?  I see threads with new posts in them labeled, but those new posts themselves aren't labeled.  It's a little tricky to read from where you left off.   ???

Like I said before, I'm really new to this whole thing, so please humor me and answer some questions.  :)

A little background:  I'm interested in short range BR shooting for groups, not score.  I've tried to answer as much as I could of my own questions, but internet pages leave a guy wanting, and it's SO much easier to "hear" it rather than "read" it. (Ok, it's a forum, I know I'll be reading responses, but you know what I mean.)  :P

1)  What makes a competition gun more accurate than a dressed-up factory gun?  More rigid action?  Tighter tolerances?  Truer Action?  Better stock design/bedding?  (On a side note, did I understand correctly that some people actually glue their actions in, not just bedded?  No screws or anything?)  Better (more uniform) materials?   Did I miss anything?

2)  Stocks seem to be made of laminated wood, (or composites?) is there any other materials used for this?

3)  Is there a point chambering a short range BR gun to anything but 6PPC?  What other rounds are competitive?  Does it make a difference between 100, 200 or 300 yrds?  6BR?  The .222 still work?  Are .30s at that much of a disadvantage?  Are .224 caliber rounds competitive?

4)  What equipment makes a complete setup (aside from rifle)?  Rests (front and back), ammo boxes, requisite gun care products, notebooks/logbooks, a reloading setup, and something to move it all?

I'm sure I could think of more but maybe I'll just leave these here for now.  I know it's a novel, just answer at your leisure, no rush.  Thanks in advance for the patience.  :)

Off Topic / New guy saying Hello.

Hi all,

I'm Matt, and I'm new to shooting and completely inexperienced and unlearned in BR.  I figured this would be a good place to start (the BR part, I got other sources on shooting so I won't bother you with "What would be a good hunting rifle to get"-like questions ;) ).  I was happy to find a BR forum that was Canadian based.  I'm in Saskatoon right now (hopefully to stay too :) ).

It took me a while to log in because I kept waiting for a confirmation email that my membership request was accepted, but one never came.  Ah well, I'm here now.

I'm a little apprehensive about being here, because everything I've seen and heard about BR tells me it's a hard sport to break into.  Very close-knit group and very technical jargon filled talk, but I'll get it eventually.  :)

Glad to be here.

PS - I chose this handle before I read the requirements for a name-based one.  I put my name in my signature, I hope that's ok.  I don't want to change my handle.  :(
