Centerfire Discussions / Poplar as wood for Benchrest stock
« on: May 19, 2013, 03:48:42 PM »
Hi all

A friend of mine who is a very knowledgeable br shooter tells me that poplar would be a very good wood for br stocks. Being in the millwork industry I kinda have a doubt about the softness of poplar.

Anyone heard this ?? What do you think ?

Hi all

I'm fairly new to the game, so I have to start with what I already have. I want to shoot in a couple of events next year in the Heavy Varmint class. So here is what I have to start with. Please don't laugh, we all have to start somewhere.

Savage Axis 223 action
Savage 12VLP barrel 1-7 twist
Rifle Basix trigger
Vortex crossfire 8-32x50 scope

Ok, I know all of this is way out of what you shoot. I want to shoot benchrest a bit like you play golf, trying to improve from your last shot all the time.

My current stock was made by myself to do a kinda do-it-all rifle. I will keep it in the safe if I go to shoot an f-class prone type event. It could have been ok for benchrest, but when I did it I made a belly shape to help keep the bipod in place, and it does not ride the bag that well.

And here is the action out of the stock. The low-price Axis has a recoil key as opposed to a recoil lug. It fits in a 3/16 groove in the stock.

I offer after-market laminated stocks for Savage Axis. What I do is I inlet a couple of blocks in advance, when I get an order I finish the shape and I apply the finish. I had a couple of blocks ready, and among them one that the mag was not fitting properly. Since I will bed the thing and shoot it single shot, no problem in taking this one that was taking space anyway.

Centerfire Discussions / Lenght of pull and overall lenght for stock
« on: July 30, 2012, 01:18:23 PM »
Hi

I'd like to make myself a new stock for my Savage. I am use to shooting prone and to hunting gun, never shot with the "free recoil" technique.

Is there any particular tips you would like to share before I start ? Do I make the LOP shorter, longer or about the same as my hunting stock for a benchrest stock ?

Also, what would be the overall lenght ? I have blanks up to 30 inches, but I can go longer than that.

This is for a "Varmint for Score" rifle, if this helps. I already have the rule book, so I know about the 3 inch wide foreend, the way to measure the slope on the buttstock, and the overall weight.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Off Topic / New to benchrest (and on this forum)

Hi all

My name is Bob, I live in Thetford Mines PQ. I have been shooting milsurps most of the time (Lee Enfields) and last year I bought a Savage Axis in 223 (please don't laugh) to build a project. Why an Axis ? Why not. I made a new stock for it, installed a 12VLP heavy barrel, new trigger, and now it works good.

I am a stockmaker also, made a couple for benchrest rigs and also for F-Class. I am also making Axis replacement stocks.

I wanted to shoot F-Class but the closest long range I have access to is 1h15 away, so going there more than 4 time in the season is a bit expensive.

So I decided to try my luck at benchrest. My range is 100m, so I figure I can learn a lot there. There are also a couple of competition near Sherbrooke that I would like to attend to next year.

I'm here to learn as much as I can. I don't have a big budget, I shoot a 223 rem and I reload for it. I want to do all I can to make my gun more precise.

Here is a picture of my modest 223. I plan on making a new stock for it.

And here is my best group so far. It says 3 but there are 4 in the hole, this was done with 60 grain Berger bullet, with CFE223 as a powder
