Following the success of our first endeavour last May we are again hosting the Fraser Valley VFS Benchrest Match for Factory and Benchrest Rifles. We had 23 shooters last year, fine weather, a low $30 entry fee, included lunch and enough prizes that everyone got at least one. We shot at 100 and 200 yards. This year we are also going to shoot at 300 yards and we expect more shooters as well. The format will be 20 score rounds at each of those ranges. The registration form is attached. Please join us if you can, and please pass this along to those you think may be interested but are unlikely to see it. Our registration deadline is April 1st. We will collect fees at the range; no need to pay now..................

For 2104 we have managed to get a consistent series of dates. We shoot the first Sunday of each month. We set up at 8:00 AM, commence matches at 9:00 AM and are usually finished by 11:30 AM. We have two classes, for Benchrest Rifles and Factory Rifles. These are fun shoots usually using IBS Hunter targets. We shoot 100, 200, and 300 yards and vary the format each month, usually shooting about 40 score rounds per match. Occasionally we shoot Group and Fun targets.

All information concerning the range and a day by day schedule is on the Mission and District Rod and Gun Club Website. http://www.missionrodandgun.com/

The Second Annual Fraser Valley VFS Championship is Scheduled for May 4, 2104 and will be a full day event. Our inaugural Event last year had 23 competitors and we anticipate at least that many again.

Newcomers are always welcome. For more information contact Jim Latham at lathamconsult@telus.net

First Annual Mission Rod and Gun Club Fraser Valley
Varmint for Score (VFS) Championship.
May 5, 2013

The weather predictions were accurate for the First Annual Fraser Valley VFS Championship. It was predicted to be very hot and windy with temperatures to be the highest of 2013, approaching 30 degrees. The day began very pleasantly at 9:00 AM as relay 1 shooters began their 100 yard matches. Twenty three shooters registered which was close to a full house; we can only accommodate 24 in a two relay match.

We were particularly delighted with the six shooters who came across by ferry from Campbell River (Greg Yeomans, Dennis Tipper, Don Sundquist, Jim Goble, Caroline Adams, and Don Ells). Our lone Washington guest, Richard Nicol who is testing the border procedures for us all was another special guest.

Early conditions were good with some light twitchy wind. So the scores really did not show the spread that they might have. The top 11 of the 18 benchrest shooters averaged over 250 points in the Benchrest Class. (Using the 11 point maximum per bull scoring system)

Following the 100 yard matches we had a sandwich and salad lunch in the Clubhouse with just enough time to discuss the good but clearly clanging conditions.

But by the start of the 200 yard relays at 12:30 conditions had turned from quite benign to challenging with heat, mirage, constantly changing winds both in direction and velocity, and lots of dust clouds. Wind flags were flipping frequently. Many shooters, including yours truly, had never shot in these conditions and it really showed. There were only 6 targets that scored over 50, and no one made the 250. The spread at 200 yards was huge- I was told that 200 yards really separates the shooters; it does. Right now I am not one of them!

The factory class of 6 were led throughout by Art Harder whose final 477 aggregate would have placed him right in the middle of the benchrest class! His SAKO 6ppc can shoot and so can he! Art also deserves a special thank you for managing the whole target arrangement with the able help of Sue Parrotta, Paul Koivukoski, David Porter, Frank Oblak and others.

Mel McIntosh and Bob Goehring did a superb job of the scoring and with the computer tally system we were able to head for the awards in mere minutes. Scoring is a very big job in a match and these two pros did a superb job.

Joe Mendham seems to be able to do it all. He Managed the Match, helped everyone, loaded between sessions, and managed to win both 100 and 200, so of course aggregate came to him as well. He is like the energizer bunny but when he sits down with gun, he exhales once and fires off 5 shots so quick the rest of us are still on the sighter it seems!!

We were very pleased that Jim Goble came a solid second in the match so that some of the hardware went to Campbell River Club and that our Chris Klumpp followed closely; he is the one who challenges Joe on our monthly matches.

We were very fortunate to have several very generous suppliers provide us with wonderful prizes and they deserve mention. Sinclair’s, Italian Sporting Goods, Ron Hoehn, Bighorn Sales, Dan Opel, Hirsch Precision, Calvin Yanchiycki, and Korth Group.

I learned I need to spend more time practicing at 200 yards in challenging conditions.

Thanks to everyone who came, helped, and provided advice. Next year will be an even bigger event. We think we can handle three relays now that we have some experience, so our max next year will be 36 shooters- expect the Second Annual Fraser Valley VFS Championship sometime in May 2014.

Our next Club Match is scheduled for Sunday June 2nd. Newcomers are welcome. For more information please contact me at lathamconsult@telus.net

Rifles / Beginners Benchrest Rifles Needed
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:04:19 AM »
Please help us find some Benchrest start up rifles

We are fortunate that we have been able to resurrect benchrest here at Mission Rod and Gun Club (we have 22 registrations and only only 2 spots left for Sunday's First Annual Fraser Valley VFS Championship), but we need a couple of startup rifles for folks who cannot make the investment into a $3000 masterpiece.

If you have an older Remington or other actioned rifle with benchrest stock in any of the benchrest calibers, please send me an e mail with information and photos to Jim Latham at lathamconsult@telus.net

Thanks for considering.............

Club Events / MRGC VFS Match: April 21, 2013
« on: April 27, 2013, 12:50:14 PM »
Center Fire Benchrest Match 4- April 21, 2013 at Mission Rod and Gun Club:

Weather still played a bit of havoc with lots of rain and twisty winds until we finished the match but the afternoon was beautiful and sunny just to annoy us all. But the match situation really began on the cleanup weekend arranged by Rifle Chair Chris Johb. We had a good turnout of members from all disciplines at MRGC a couple of big machines and lots of hand tool. Of most significance to us was that we were able to make adjustments to all the many berms on this range and it now allows us to see the 100, 200, and three target frames from all 12 concrete benches, which we had been unable to see before. That means we can now handle 24 shooters at all benches with two relays.
We had 11 shooters. Rob Finnigan made the trek from Sunshine coast so we had a chance to see his lovely thumbhole stock rifle. Sam was able to shoot (without the approval of his Doctor or wife Sue but once at the range he had to do it; we hope he did not overdo it!! We want him ship shape for May5th.
Everyone shot their usual rifles except Joe shot My Coyote 6ppc as his rifle was not back yet from Nobby; I picked it up for him yesterday as Nobby whisked by on his usual trek to Kamloops Gun Show. No issues for Wally, Art, Chris or Joe this time at all. Lowell tried one of his match pistols but really struggled with the optics and vision and it will take some work. I finally got a chance to see shoot the 30BR BAT just barrelled by Nobby with a Bartlein and the latest Randy Robinette reamer. My excuse for not winning is was a first firing with totally undeveloped loads. Chris took another break from house building and capped the showm (tied by Joe). In Factory Art shot remarkable targets with his SAK0 Sporter 6ppc. With its skinny varmint barrel and several thousand rounds through his scores are basically indistinguishable from the better full bench rest guns. Of course how well Art shoots and the practice he does sure helps. Paul did not match his best scores in factory from the past nor did Mel but I think these guys are wanting to boost Arts confidence so they can sneak up behind during the championship. The gamesmanship starts now I am told. And we have not had Bob Goehring for a while and we know he can shoot. Then of course Campbell river is sending 6 and these guys and gals and our American entries are well known for some super shooters. In preparation for the May 5th Fraser Valley Championship we shot our first two targets at 200, and finished with three at 100 so everyone’s rifles would be set for 100 where the morning targets will be shot.

At this point we have 22 entries for May 5th Championship. We can take 24 so if you have a last minute chance to join us, go to the MRGC website and you will see the registration form as you open the page. Complete and send it to me Immediately. First two to join will be taken. We are providing best score  awards first through 3rd in each of 100 and 200 and aggregate for each of Benchrest and Factory (18 total) We have many fine prizes donated already by several very generous suppliers; no one who enters will go home empty handed. These will be awarded by draw.
We welcome newcomers to our Monthly Matches and for more information please contact me, Jim Latham, at lathamconsult@telus.net or phone me at 604-795-0618. Please feel free to pass this summary on to anyone you think may be interested. Next Club Match will be on Sunday June 2. Registration  8:30 AM. Match at 9:00-11:30, $5 fee.

Center Fire Benchrest Match 3- March 10, 2013 at Mission Rod and Gun Club:

It was still fairly brisk for Match 3 of 2013, but at least in BC we can shoot, unlike some parts of the Great White North. We had 9 shooters; David Porter joined us for the first time and we think we have another recruit.  Once he got the scope straightened out on his factory rifle he produced some fine shooting. With bipod on his .223 he shot a 49. We also had our first Junior Shooter, Sam Parotta’s Nephew Matthew Parrotta, who is learning quickly and really improved over the 5 targets. Sam had to sit out following a car accident on the infamous Patullo Bridge when some chap decided to drive where Sam already was. We are glad Sam is mostly okay even if his vehicle is not.
Everyone shot their usual rifles except Frank who again brought another rifle, but this one looks like it is a benchrest gun. Joe passed on an old BR stock which Frank is already making work very well indeed. No issues for Wally, Lowell, Art, Chris or Joe this time at all. And it was great to have Chris back with us. His house building took a break this weekend and we are pleased.
In preparation for the May 5th Fraser Valley Championship we shot our first full 200 yard 5 target match. I did not shoot due to the crowding and the fact that we cannot clear all the berms from every bench at 200 yards; we are working on that. Despite our lack of experience at 200 there were some very fine targets shot. Art had a 50 with his beautiful SAKO 6ppc sporter. Wally and Lowell each got a 50 as well, Chris managed a 52 and a 50, and Frank almost got Joe with two 50’s and two 51’s. But again Joe squeaked one more point in total and was the match winner. However it is great to see both Frank and Chris challenging Joe. And by next match I hope to have my new 30BR  BAT actioned VFS HV rifle ready to go; I need the advantage of that 30 calibre bullet!

Club Events / Mission VFS BR Match 2, February 10, 2013
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:08:17 AM »

Center Fire VFS Benchrest Match 2- February 10, 2013 at Mission Rod and Gun Club:

Well there was only one nice day in weeks around here and guess what, it was Match Day, a small miracle in itself. Clear and a bit cold at first but it warmed up nicely and the bonus was there was very little wind all day; it was a bit tricky though because it could fool shooters.
We had 6 shooters, the group that has been most regular in the past while. Everyone shot their usual rifles except Frank who brings a different rifle every match. He can't seem to make up his mind. But this time he brought a full blown F class unlimited in 6BR and is that a nice piece!! And he is working hard on converting one of his guns into a benchrest configuration. Sam has been having challenges getting a rest for the 3” forend of the BAT he got from Joe so he used his Remington he got from me (lots of in house trading going on- it is worse on scopes.) Wally has his trigger working properly and it showed in his best results yet! Joe had his beautiful black BAT that really shoots. Despite that he is going to re-barrel it soon. Lowell had his red personally built custom that is a thing of beauty, and I had my newly re barreled Coyote I just brought back from Nobby Uno. I switched the scope from the B&L (which is going on my 30 BR Robinette that Nobby is barrelling with a Bartlein now as we write) to the Leupold  I got from Joe. (see about the scope switches) It seems I almost always have some sort of brain fade. Only two weeks ago we broke in the new barrel and Joe shot a dynamite first group with it in the low .1’s. Well since then I changed the scope and the groups I managed were about 4”, not .4. When I got home I found the scope had almost slid off the front base. I understand now from Mentor Joe that I am the one who is supposed to be loose when I shoot, not my scope!!! I am a slow learner it seems. So needless to say everyone beat me badly.

But there were two highlights to the Day for sure, besides the weather. The first was that Sue Parrotta offered to score the targets for us which was great. Nobody got away with any of these iffy "It sorta touched the line stuff” In the end we had to add a couple of points to the serious whiners so there was no pouting. But hey I am not going to ever criticize someone who does that job for us. Thank you Sue!!

And the second highlight was that after the 100 yard match was done we put up one 200 yard target (Yes, at 200 yards) and Lowell and behold we all shot that very well and most of us had never shot a 200 yards VFS target before. So next time the match will be at 200 so we can practice that distance. You see there are several of Greg Yeoman's Campbell River boys who are intending to come to our Fraser Valley VFS Championship on May 5th to which you are invited is you can get here (Registration on the next thread) and those guys shoot at 200, 300 and further. I heard they just throw rocks at 100 because they think it is so easy. So we have to get ready so they don't take all our marbles home across the Sea. Some of us need to keep the marbles we still have left!

We do have at least one secret weapon, Joe, who set our all time best score ever. His targets looked like he was shooting at 10 yards not 100. And when Chris, Bob H. Dori, manage to get back here I am sure we can give the Campbell River boys a good run in Benchrest. And Art, Paul, Travis, Mel, and Bob G can do very well in Factory too. We are hoping that some of the shooters from the Okanagan show as well.

We welcome newcomers to our Monthly Matches and if more information is wanted please contact me, Jim Latham, at lathamconsult@telus.net or phone me at 604-795-0618. Please feel free to pass this summary on to anyone you wish who may be interested.

Center Fire Benchrest Match 1- January 13, 2013 at Mission Rod and Gun Club:

It was cold! Mission Rod and Gun Club is in the mountains and there was snow on the ground but the day was clear and windless. Still 7 shooters showed for the first match of 2013. Some of our regulars could not make it this time due to travel challenges, but it was nice to see Paul Koivukoski back to take a clean sweep of the factory class. Mind you he was the only factory class shooter, but he shot well. And Frank Oblak a serious F Class shooter joined us again. This time Frank brought a Hunter Sporter in 6.5x55sw that he is going to rebarrel in 6BR and put onto a benchrest stock Joe Mendham had. We may be moving him over from the Dark Side (at least once in a while). Sam Parrotta shot the best he has with the Remington 700 I passed on to him and he just bought Joe Mendham’s beautiful BAT so we anticipate he is soon to contend for top honours. Lowell Boyd brought another of his immaculate home built rifles and shot a few excellent targets with it. Wally struggled with a very cranky trigger which I think was freezing up. And me, well my mind froze. While showing some onlookers all about handloading between sets I neglected to prime my brass. The first shot I fired was extremely quiet. A good lesson for me; I need to concentrate on one thing, especially when loading ammo. Wally did remark however that I saved a fair bit of money by not using primers……and look at all the powder I did not use up…..

The course of fire for this match again was five 100 yard Hunter score targets and we decided to close up shop after that because everyone was getting cold. (Except Frank- those F Class shooters get tough lying on the ground) We had hoped to do some 200 yard targets to begin preparation for the Fraser Valley Invitational VFS Match May 5. Mark that on your Calendar!

No one shot a perfect 55 target this time, but both Joe Mendham  and Sam Parrotta shot one 54 each. Joe won the aggregate again. He has not been beaten since we began last year. I am starting to be convinced that this is not luck, much as I hate to admit it.  However Sam and I both have new guns and are going to tag team him.

We welcome newcomers and if more information is wanted please contact me, Jim Latham, at lathamconsult@telus.net or phone me at 604-795-0618. Please feel free to pass this summary on to anyone you wish who may be interested.

Club Events / BR or not to BR? That is the question.
« on: December 19, 2011, 09:37:59 AM »

BR or not to BR? That is the question.

1.   Do you live in Southern BC or on Vancouver Island?
2.   Do you have a Benchrest Centerfire rifle?
3.   (or) Do you have a precision scoped rifle for another discipline?
4.   (or) Do you have a varmint rifle?
5.   Are you interested in learning more about Benchrest Shooting and precision reloading?
6.   Could you get to Mission and District Rod and Gun Club for a Sunday afternoon? (http://www.missionrodandgun.com/

If you can answer yes to questions 1, 5, and 6 and to one of 2, 3, or 4 I would encourage you to send me an E mail. lathamconsult@telus.net.  A group of us are interested in re-establishing Benchrest shooting early in 2012 beginning with very introductory informal fun sessions.
