Title: Wanted: 22 cal CF barrel
Post by: cyanchycki on December 20, 2010, 03:51:27 PM
Anybody have a new one sitting around they want to get rid of and sell?

Looking for a 14 twist to finish around 22 inches for a 223 project.  Ripping apart my Rem 700 6BR for a little smaller coyote round.

Was never really satisfied with .224 rounds for coyotes. Even the 22-250 sucks at 300 plus.

I agree to a degree:

A 223 or 22-250 works great for coyote hunting….as long as your hunting partner has a 7mm magnum or something similar for the longer shots, and a good laser rangefinder.

I kind of know what you are talking about Phil.

I have my factory Rem 700 243 Win in a youth model that I have been using but I just do not have the accuracy I want and it hits a little to hard if trying to save the pelts.  I am not saying that the 223 will be that much better but I know it will be just by going to a match barrel.  That 243 also jumps a fair bit being so small and light.  I like the light part.  I have thought over and over about this and after talking with Rob at Jo Brooks who is a coyote hunter his favorite is still the 223.  He has a 20 Tactical and 20 Vartarg as well but loves the 223.

In regards to the long shots where I hunt there is not to often one should outside 200 yards.  I always have the 243 with me if needed to lay the smackdown if I wanted.  It is just something I have wanted and never had.  Have had the 22-250 but hated loading for it.

you might find that 1 in 14 to be a little slow   especially if you want some hitting power     best of luck      smitty

Calvin i have a Savage LRPV in .223 with the 1 and 9 twist and it shoots 52 gr. just as accurate as 69gr. I was kind of surprised as i figured i would have to stay with heavier bullets. The best of both worlds.

Gary,

Would you please share your 52 grain bullet load information?  The bullet, powder you use, and charge.  I would greatly appreciate it.

The reason I am asking is I am working with a Savage Model 12 .223 Remington with a Hart barrel with 1:9” twist rate. It was installed this past winter and after three shooting sessions it appears to prefer Berger 64 grain bullets and Varget powder.  However, I have a bunch of 52 grain benchrest bullets that I would like to use in it if I could get them to shoot well. I have tried Tucker, Knights, and Gentner 52 grain bullets in it with 25 to 25.5 grains of N133 powder but none of these bullets are shooting as well as the Berger 64’s with Varget.

If you would, please let us know what has worked best for you in your rifle. Any insight you may have regarding the use of 52 grain bullets in a 1:9” twist barrel is what I am looking for.

Best Regards,
