Title: Ultra New to Benchrest!!
Post by: abouwer on March 26, 2010, 05:02:23 PM
Well, like i siad, im new to this, and have a lot of questions. Me and my family recently moved to Canada from South Africa. I was a professional hunter and have been involved with guns my whole life, and want to get involved in BR shooting NOW! I have two guns, and i know it wont be great for the job, but want to use them to get started. I have a 6mm-284 on a 40X Action and my wife shoots a 223AI on a Shilen DGA action. We really want to start shooting as we are both serious about shooting. I currently live in Oyen alberta, and would just love to attend a mach and shoot for the fun to see what its about. Any ideas on matches or just fun shooting.

Welcome aboard.  You are in luck.  Tony G or Rick P on the board will be able to help you out in Alberta.

Matches are held at the Rosebud range SW of Calgary(more West) than south.  They have a score shoot planned and a few group shoots planned.  The Canadian Nationals will be held there this August Long Weekend.

The 6 X 284 might be a bit much off of the bench but the 223AI would work fine.  It would be worth the trip to come and give it a try.  Lots of full blown benchrest rifles around in Alberta and some may even be up for sale if interested.

It is nice to see your wife shoots.  If she shoots she would be the second in Western Canada to shoot.  Maxine Seib from Regina shoots and usually can put the men in there place........ :'( :'( :'(

Again welcome, ask questions and you will see we are a friendly bunch of people.

Calvin

There is a score match saturday June 12. It won't be a registered match so guys can shoot it without being a BRSC member. It is H.V. for score so a weight limit of 131/2 pounds. Registration will be at 8 am match starts at 9am.100 and 200 yds. No bench rotation. Would be a great way to get your feet wet!!!!!

First off, welcome to Alberta!

Schedule is here: http://www.benchrest.ca/Schedule__Calendar_.html

Rosebud Club info is here: http://www.benchrest.ca/Clubs.html (take note it is not near the town of Rosebud!).

As far as shooting, gophers are up now, and there should be plenty around Oyen!

Well, im impressed. Thanks for the decent comments and just normal talk, without anybody trying to prove a point. This is THE FIRST shooting related forum, where it seems guys are trying to be helpful. Thanks. About my 6mm 284, will i even be allowed to shoot it at matches? Dont know the rules at all. I will be thinking of rebarrelling to a 6BR pretty soon, just wanna use this guy for a while. This is my smallest calibre, and i own a 475 A&M Magnum, and i decided not to try that at all. (Its a terrible gun but it works for hunting big stuff.) Great being part of the forum, and between my coyote hunting and gopher hunting i would love to meet you guys and shoot together. And yes, my wife LOVES to hunt and shoot. All she wants for birthday gifts are hunting trips and guns. Man life sucks!!

About my 6mm 284, will I even be allowed to shoot it at matches?

Sure you can as long as it does not have a muzzle brake on it.  They are not allowed in competition.  Weight wise if it is under 10.5 lbs it is legal for Light Varmint and under 13.5 for Heavy Varmint.  If it is heavier than a LV you can still shoot but you just need to be aware that you cannot take any hardware home if you win something.  The key is getting a taste of what the sport is about and trying to shoot them tiny groups.

If you do rebarrel to 6BR it would be much nicer to shoot from a bench.  You would have no problem having it done in Alberta.  Heck you could even do it in 6PPC or the 6mm Beggs and go no turn necks if you do not want to turn necks off of the hop.

Well moving from South Africa you are probably used to the big boomers.  Big boomers and me do not get along.  I HATE RECOIL..........

In regards to rules you can get them online here.  http://nbrsa.com/rules.pdf

We follow the NBRSA rule book.  Come to a match and the guys will fill you in pretty fast on the basics.  The big one, “NO BOLTS ARE ALLOWED IN RIFLES” until the range officer gives the command at the firing line.  Also when a “CEASE FIRE” is called it is just that a “CEASE FIRE”.

The perfect gift for your wife for her b-day or Christmas a new Bench rest rifle....... :o :o

Yeah, that's what I found when I joined here a week ago or so.  Very nice folks.  I joined another BR forum a while ago, and not that the guys were mean, but they didn't seem overly concerned about being helpful either.

If your looking for a shooting/hunting forum, try shootersforum.com.  Friendly, knowledgeable people, experience in most facets of shooting, and guys that have been shooting twice as long as I've been alive!  Moderated very well.  Best site out there (but lacking in the competition area: that's why I joined here!).

It looks like you'll have a chance to try BR out before me.  Don't forget when you go for your first time to post pictures and comments about your experience.  :)

Again, kudos to the guys here!
